Scrapwall

Scrapwall: Massive junkyard ruled by gangs

Overview

Scrapwall is not a town per se, but rather a settlement built within a colossal junkyard created when a spacecraft crashed a long time ago. There is no government, no stable economy, and no law except for the merciless might of rival gangs.

History

During the Rain of Stars event in 3804, a “metal mountain” and smaller “metal rocks” or “stars” fell from the sky and lit up the plains of Numeria, breaking apart and falling in pieces across the land. One of such objects was a colossal pile of metal, refuse, and junk that broke and scattered along a miles-long swath of land just east of the Sellen River. In time, this site came to be known as Scrapwall, a sprawling junkyard of cast-off technology and useless refuse and debris. The site was once one of the nation’s greatest sources of skymetal other than Silver Mount itself, but it has long since been depleted of this precious resource. Passages and open-air thoroughfares wind through and around artificial mountains of mangled metal like a maze. Though not a proper settlement, Scrapwall is far from uninhabited—the tangled stretch is infested by several bickering and squabbling gangs of bandits and thugs, for its status as a no-man’s-land quickly resulted in it becoming a favorite haunt for those who sought a place they could live without the fear of being tracked down and brought to justice.

And so the denizens of Scrapwall lived for centuries. The balance of power within shifted constantly as time wore on. The Technic League took a brief interest in the site in the first decade of the organization’s existence, but the bandits’ eagerness to defend their homes and the fact that the overwhelming amount of salvage in Scrapwall was almost entirely broken or useless swiftly convinced the League to turn its attention to closer, more productive archaeological sites.

Today, Scrapwall is a bastion for outcasts, criminals, and vagabonds, huddling together in gangs for mutual protection. The current gangs of note within Scrapwall, in ascending order of power, are the Steel Hawks, Redtooth Raiders, the Smilers, and the Ladies of Rust, which now rule Scrapwall, and they are in turn ruled by an unknown force. Loners of significant power are believed to dwell within Scrapwall as well, including a mysterious worshiper of Brigh, a powerful mutated manticore, and an unknown number of undead spirits that haunt the region’s easternmost reaches, but most of those living in Scrapwall are riffraff and lowlifes known collectively as "scrappers"—exiles and vagabonds who pay tribute to one of the region’s gangs for protection but have no affiliation of their own.

Residents of Scrapwall can earn a place in one of the region’s many gangs by proving their bravery, ruthlessness, and audacity, qualities known collectively by locals as one’s “scrapworth.” The higher your scrap-worth, the more respect you’re afforded, and the less likely you are to be bullied by any of Scrapwall’s more powerful denizens.
